A Right Fishy Tale!!!!
My friends Peter and Mark had taken Peter’s dad fishing one day to the Spey. Gilbert was quite happy to sit in one spot all day and trundle a worm for trout. They, however, were going to thrash away up stream. After a good day they all met up just below the bridge at Kingussie where they had left Gilbert. He had a brace of lovely Spey trout for tomorrow breakfast. Bump, bump he thought he had another nibble and everyone waited with baited breath. One long draw, strike, and up went the rod tip. Fish on!!! Out in the stream they could just make out a dull glinting under the surface. Coupled with the strong surges a salmon seemed to be on the cards. It was the most amazing fight ever to have been witnessed. Staying deep the flashes kept glinting strongly under the surface. The surges were something to behold!!! It never jumped but they had to follow it downstream. Gilbert was sweating buckets and everyone was anxious he would not lose it. Then they came to a steep bit of bank and the fight seemed to lessen. Mark jumped down to attempt to tail it. They had no net big enough for salmon with them that day. From his vantage point Gilbert could not see the final acts of this drama. He was shouting advice and begging Mark to be careful. One more mighty swirl and all was revealed. Mark shouted up that he wasn’t going to touch it as it had too many teeth! Is it a pike Gilbert roared? No it’s a bloody saw!
Gilbert had hooked a carpenter’s saw in the small hole at the tip. The silver flexing blade, the heavy wooden handle and the swift stream he was fishing in combined to provide the most epic battle ever witnessed by an angler. Gilbert flopped to the ground as Mark and Peter rolled about laughing.
What a day and what a fight!!
